List Price Versus Invoice Net — Keeping Both Honest

Commercial analysts need both the published list and the invoice net. Confusing the two turns every corridor chart into an argument.

Two neat stacks of documents on a dark stone surface

List price is the published reference. Invoice net is what settled after standing discounts, promotions, and agreed deductions. Boards often receive one number labelled ‘price’ without saying which.

When we commission a pricing insight dashboard, the first definition sheet names both. Charts that mix the two in a single series create false urgency — or false calm.

A practical habit: show list as a reference line and invoice net as the cloud or series that moves. Then annotate the period when a national promotion or rebate accrual changed the net without touching the published list.

Category managers sometimes defend a list increase while nets have already moved through trade terms. Separating the views makes that contradiction visible before the memo goes upstairs.

If your extracts cannot produce a clean invoice net for every SKU, say so in the reading guide. A partial view labelled clearly beats a smooth chart built on silent gaps.
